The Huntress

Art Deco sculptural group

Period bronze/metal, onyx and marble

A female archer takes aim as two antelope spring away across a geometric landscape.

The figure draws on Diana the Huntress, the Roman goddess of the hunt, wilderness and the moon — the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess Artemis.

She became a recurring figure in Art Deco sculpture: independent, athletic and powerful, a classical subject perfectly suited to the new fascination with movement, speed and the female form.

Bronze and metal figures contrast with the hard geometry and natural veining of onyx and marble, turning an ancient mythological image into something unmistakably modern.
