The Hour Between

Oil on canvas
Post-war Polish Modernism

There is almost nothing here, and somehow an entire person remains.

A turned head. The line of a neck. Hair pulled back. A shoulder caught in a few quick strokes of paint.

Made in Poland in the post-war period, the work sits within the looser figurative modernism that followed the great Polish Colourist generation.

The painter understands when to stop.

Areas are left unresolved, allowing the surface itself to become part of the figure.

It feels less like a formal portrait than a moment remembered.
